Wikipedia:Manual of Style
Mai Wikipedia
The Manual of Style is a style guide for users that aims to make the encyclopedia easier to read. One way of presenting information is often just as good as another, but consistency promotes professionalism, simplicity and greater cohesion in Wikipedia articles.
[E ho'opololei] General guidelines
- Always refer to nā lula kepela (spelling rules) when working with articles.
[E ho'opololei] Titles (no nā inoa, nā po‘o)
- Article titles generally comprise nouns or noun phrases.
- The title should be short: using more than ten words may defeat the purpose.
- Only the first letter (not counting the ‘okina) of the first word, letters in acronyms, and the first letter of proper nouns are capitalized; all other letters are in lower case (Hale ki‘i‘oni‘oni, not Hale Ki‘i‘oni‘oni).
- If the noun of the title is singular, no article is needed to precede the noun (Ka‘a, not Ke ka‘a). If the noun of the title is plural, use the plural article nā (such as Nā ‘ōlelo o ka honua).
- Pronouns and possessives (kou, lākou) are normally avoided.
- Links are never used, in favor of linking the first occurrence of the item in the text.
- Special characters such as the slash (/), plus sign (+), curly brackets ({ }) and square brackets ([ ]) are avoided; unless it is a part of a formal name, the ampersand (&) is replaced by and or a me.
- The ‘okina that should be used is ( ‘ ) and not the apostrophe ( ' ), the tick ( ` ), or another type of ‘okina ( ʻ ). In order to produce the correct ‘okina, use option-] on a Mac, Alt-0145 on Windows, the ‘okina template by typing {{okina}}, or the editing toolbox.
[E ho'opololei] Articles (no nā mo‘olelo)
- Please use diacritics (‘okina and kahakō) for all words when necessary.
(please translate into Hawaiian if possible)
