Help[edit source]

Hi! I'm Kamehameha. Could you translate to me this words onto Hawaiian, please?

  • Area
  • Population
  • Density
  • Province
  • Country
  • Autonomous community

Thanks a lot. --Kamehameha 11:11, 31 Mei 2008 (UTC)

I'll introduce him for you...he's been here since September of last year. He doesn't know much Hawaiian, however, he has been a big help to the project. He's the guy that blew up the article count from 50 articles to over 1,000 adding articles on local communities in Spain! You'll see these requests from him sporadically, as have I. Imagine a world...[edit source]

Aloha kāua!

Here's Jimbo's great quote:

Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s what we’re doing.

I thought it might be fun to translate it, so I did. This is what I got: "Kuhi i ka honua i hā‘awi ‘ia ai ka po‘e āpau i ka ‘ike kanaka noa āpau. ‘Oia kō mākou hana." What do you think?

I also want to discuss manual of style here and how articles should be written and organized. Singularity 07:29, 1 Iune 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that its ka po‘e, but not so sure on ka ‘ike (the intended meaning is the knowledge). Singularity 16:58, 1 Iune 2008 (UTC)
I've changed it to say, "Kuhi i ka honua i hā‘awi ‘ia ai nā kānaka āpau i nā ‘ike kanaka noa āpau. ‘Oia kō mākou hana." Singularity 18:59, 1 Iune 2008 (UTC)

How I learned Hawaiian[edit source]

Well, I have my ways :) Actually, I attended KS for 6 years (K-5), so I learned the pronunciation and basic sentences like ‘O wai kou inoa, and so forth. However, I learned all of the more complex grammar from two sources: Kulāiwi, an instructional program on the Hawaiian language, and "Spoken Hawaiian" by Samuel Elbert, a textbook on Hawaiian. I started and finished the lessons on Kulāiwi in late summer of last year, and bought the textbook from Borders six months ago, so its only been now that I've been able to contribute effectively here.

There it is. Singularity 02:22, 3 Iune 2008 (UTC)

i ko?[edit source]

I noticed you had this question in your edit summary. It's the possessive marker. There's two ways of noting possession: NounA o NounB (e.g. Ke ka‘a o Pua The car of Pua) or Ko NounB NounA (e.g. Ko Pua ka‘a Pua's car). So i ko ‘Amelika Hui moku‘āina o Hawai‘i means "in America's state of Hawai‘i". Singularity 07:22, 12 Iune 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I've seen both ko and kō being used as possessive markers with the same meaning. Singularity 19:17, 12 Iune 2008 (UTC)
Hmm...now I think and look over it, kō seems to be endorsed by my textbook and the dictionary, although it seems that in some texts online that use the diacritics, I find ko being used as well. It makes no difference, I guess. P.S. I should note that kō can also mean the neutral possessive marker "your" (e.g. kō ‘ai = your food). Singularity 03:22, 13 Iune 2008 (UTC)
Interesting. Singularity 06:40, 13 Iune 2008 (UTC)

Nonkilling[edit source]

Aloha! I was wondering if you could help out with a brief Hawaiian translation of the entry on nonkilling [1]. It doesn't need to be whole thing: the first paragraph (or even the first sentence) would do! It's quite significant to have this entry in Hawaiian as the concept was born in the Islands and the Center for Global Nonkilling is also based in Honolulu! Mahalo! --Cgnk 21:11, 4 Iune 2009 (UTC)
